As the title suggests, this outstanding caper by Daniel Silva definitely has something to do with the art master, Rembrandt. Try as he may the protagonist Gabriel Allon, a feared and deadly Mossad assassin as well as a world-renown art restorer (quite the combination, to say the least), cannot seem to cut his ties to the spy organization and gets pulled in to a case involving a brutal murder and a now stolen long-lost painting by Rembrandt. Silva utilizes a diverse gathering of characters (art dealer, journalist, art thief, billionaire, among others) and weaves these many different worlds together in a fast-paced novel that keeps you turning pages to discover what happens next and discover how Allon will meet the challenge he has accepted. Anyone who enjoys the universe of espionage, who can't get enough fast action and likes mixing in current events and worldly wonders will, more than likely, find The Rembrandt Affair a very enjoyable read. Highly recommended. This is the 10th in the long-running Gabriel Allon series, which started in 2000 with The ill Artist, though all novels are stand-alones.Tags : The Rembrandt Affair (Gabriel Allon) [Daniel Silva] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Of those writing spy novels today, Daniel Silva is quite simply the best.
-The Kansas City Star

The perfect book for fans of well-crafted thrillers ... the kind of page- turner that captures the reader from the opening chapter and doesn't let go.
-The Associated Press

Gabriel Allon,Daniel Silva,The Rembrandt Affair (Gabriel Allon),G.P. This is a remarkable fictional story about a very sad time in the world both during WW II and moving into present time. The characters are well developed and I have already ordered the first in the series of Gabriel Allon stories. I will be reading more nonfiction books regarding the topic of the mass muder of the Jewish people's and the pillaging and robbing of their belongings.
I am not sure why I decided to write my first review. Probably because I want to pass pleasure on to others. I happened on Silva about 6 months ago. I am not sure how I missed him all these years. I have now read all but 2 of all his Gabriel Allon books. And will be sad when they are devoured. I don't pretend to be a lit critic but I do know good writing when I see it and historical imagination when I feel it (seldom). And I really enjoy a book where I am fascinated by the characters, the plot makes sense, and the author juices things up but doesn't go off the reservation. The Allon books provide great insight into the Israeli psyche, interesting tidbits about secret and sacred institutions like the Vatican and CIA. Plus an insider, seemingly real world view, of the black art practiced by the CIA and other covert entities. At this point Silva has me feeling like I have finished a number of good college courses in history, literature, and contemporary events. Anyone starting the Allon series can go on-line identify the books by date and start at the beginning. After three or four you can buy two four book composites (for and tablets) and then finish up from there. BTW my wife is also hooked on the Allon books and we often gab about characters, insights, and the like. Finally, it is surprising that Silva's writing is so consistently good. Each book is at the same high level as the last. That's why he is the real deal.
A Rembrandt painting called Portrait of a Young Woman goes missing and London art dealer Julian Isherwood is on the hook for it. Scotland Yard and various other law enforcement agencies are called into action but Julian adds one more investigator to the mix, Israel’s secret agent Gabriel Allon. Gabriel is a renowned art restorer and has helped get Isherwood out of earlier predicaments.
Gabriel, who happens to be on holiday with his wife Chiara in England’s Cornwall area, readily joins the search. So where does he start? In cases like this where something is lost, Allon reasons that the best approach is to look at where the item has been.
Allon’s search takes him to different European cities including Paris and Geneva. He soon identifies a Swiss billionaire named Martin Landesmann who is an avid collector of precious art and would probably be very interested in the whereabouts of a missing Rembrandt. Landesmann is a an extremely private individual and information about his wealth and business activities is almost impossible to learn. Gabriel and his cohorts recruit an attractive BBN television personality named Zoe to infiltrate Martin’s world and do some spying. Martin, who is married to a woman named Monique, nevertheless gets romantically involved with Zoe and she begins digging for secrets. She keeps Gabriel and his team informed of her progress and the chase is on.
Author Daniel Silva’s writing is particularly excellent in this book as the end of each chapter almost demands that you keep reading. The ending is filled with excitement and tension, leading to a most satisfying ending.
In a final Author’s Note Silva reports that there is no such Rembrandt painting called Portrait of a Young Woman. Instead, if there was such a painting, it would look remarkably like Rembrandt’s Portrait of Hendrickje Stoffels. That painting currently hangs in London’s National Gallery on Trafalgar Square.
This is another well-written book by Silva, set largely in Britain and Europe. Like many of Silva’s previous novels the plot in this one has an undercurrent of the wrongs committed by the Nazis against the Jews during Hitler’s reign in Germany and occupied Europe before and during the second world war. The plot of this novel revolves around Nazi war crimes and the theft during the war of a previously unknown Rembrandt painting owned by a Jewish family. Gabriel Allon searches for the painting and uncovers the history of what happened to it after the war and up to the present. It is a good story overall.
The difference with this novel from the previous ones I have read is that this one dwells largely on the crimes committed by Nazis to a much greater extent. It also involves the story of the corruption of Swiss bankers then and now, but seemed devoted entirely to the crimes committed against the Jews during the war and later. It seemed over-weighted on that topic.
