Scotland under Nazi rule!
October 1940... When German troops march triumphantly along the streets of Edinburgh, James Baird feels drawn to watch.
At 20 years old, James is a student at Edinburgh University, and is ashamed he has done nothing in the defense of his country.
Behind him the high ramparts of iconic Edinburgh Castle are festooned with garish red swastika banners. Sickened by the music and swaggering Nazis, James takes refuge in the Edinburgh University Union bar, determined to drown his sorrows before returning home.
As his new role in German-controlled Edinburgh is revealed, he is determined to fight the new oppressors in any way he can... but how much can one man do?
Thus begins, Avenging Steel, a new Alternative History series.
Get your teeth into a brand-new version of World War 2.

Avenging Steel 1 The Fall of Edinburgh eBook Ian Hall

I gave such a high rating because this is a real page turner. The lead character is a regular Edinburgh university student whose life is changed when the Nazis march into town. He goes from immature young man lead into spying to a more experienced, bloodied spy in a truly believable way. He's no superhero, just a man drawn into a darker world than he ever truly thought existed driven by patriotism and love of family. Bad things happen in an occupation and we see that happening. My biggest quibble with the book is that it ended too soon. Reading the next installment ASAP. Likable and believable characters. Well worth reading

Avenging Steel 1 The Fall of Edinburgh eBook Ian Hall Reviews

As a student of World War II, I found the premise of Hall's book--the Nazi occupation of Scotland--horrifying. For God's sake, wasn't it enough that they had the whole of the continent and bombed the hell out of Great Britain? But this terrifying "What-if" is a compelling story, told by a son of Edinburgh, literally and figuratively. Ian is a master storyteller, in both developing plot and character. Another winner from an incredibly talented author.
James Baird aka Biggles is taking a chance, risking his life and honor long after the Germans have routed Scotland. Guilt motivates him, love of family and country sustain him. Lovely language in this spy novel akin to something Dean Koontz would have written in his more lyrical prose, for example "...autumnal trees shedding their leaves like tears, the traitorous sky above shoneblue and cloudless."

An interesting read---highly recommended due to its authentic feel in the make believe world of a Nazi-controlled Scotland.
