I'm not sure exactly what I expected, but I'm pretty sure this book surpassed whatever I had in mind.First, the dialogue was amusing & easy to imagine. The characters seemed so real, & the way they interacted was natural & believable. The situations didn't feel contrived. And there was none of the cheesy "I love you, you complete me, & I cannot breathe if you're not near me" garbage that would've been totally against the nature of any of the characters. The couple was an excellent representation of two independent people who are inexplicably drawn to each other despite wanting to kill each other at the same time. About half-way through, I was literally laughing out loud.
Second, there was none of the misunderstandings that plague romance novels. Both hero & heroine acknowledged that they felt something for the other & admitted that the other must feel something in return. Both characters had to deal with their own confusion regarding their feelings & their former opinions on the nature of love. They also had to deal with admittedly stupid decisions made out of selfishness & learn how to forgive. It was mature & refreshing, while at the same time extremely funny. The inevitable (but unnecessary) romp in the bedroom didn't occur until about three-quarters of the way through & arrived at a logical point (tho it was, again, unnecessary...their passion & connection was obvious without it).
Third, the characters were likeable. As I mentioned before, they were real. Each had flaws & some characters grew, but they weren't flawless by the end. There was no "Poor me, why is this happening to me?" Julia was thrust into independence, & tho the reader isn't privy to her growth, it still seemed fairly obvious to me that she could take care of herself & make tough decisions to care for her responsibilities. Harrison's need to protect & control might have been more annoying had the author not shed light on his childhood. Of course, Julia's refusal to accept his behavior made her even more believable as an independent, intelligent woman. Supporting characters, especially Julia's friends, added depth & humor to the story. Figure in the additional elements of the ghost of a dead great grandmother, Harrison's father, Julia's grandmother, an amoral author, & a comfortable publisher/suitor, and the supporting cast was well-rounded.
Finally, wit & wisdom were dribbled throughout in the form of the memoirs of Hermione, Julia's great grandmother. I thought it was an interesting & unique way to help guide the story while previewing where the next chapter would lead. It also offered some interesting perspectives on love, men, & relationships.
I really enjoyed this book & would highly recommend it to friends who enjoy Regency tales featuring intelligent, strong characters without contrived misunderstandings & situations. It was a truly enjoyable tale, & I'll be checking out other books by this author.

The Perfect Mistress Victoria Alexander 9781420117059 Books Reviews
This book was an enjoyable historical romance. The characters were interesting and well developed. I don't regret my purchase. I liked the premise of a scandalous memoir from the Regency period, though the whole ghost thing was a bit much.
you'll never make a mistake in reading Victoria Alexander books.. fun exciting to read very enjoyable..
Very enjoyable fantasy/romance with many life lessons that are often overlooked. Forgiveness defeats regrets always and grudges/hatreds may destroy you.
Excellent
Great read, really enjoyed the twist and turns . It was so good I hated to put the book down.
This was a lovely story of the power of love . It captured me from the moment I began and although I was sorry to see it end, cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
I just loved this book.
The back and forth with the hero and heroine, the complications of the ghost and the advice, some of it dreadful, coming from all directions.
The hapless hero who cannot quite keep his mouth shut, then drives away, in trouble again, and once he calms down thinks, --She is driving me mad, that's the only reason I said such a stupid thing.--
So sharp and funny. I especially loved the back and forth jump to the Memoirs that have fallen into the heroine's possession. They mirror the story, what's going to happen next in a way that made me excited to read them and impatient then to get to the next chapter in the book. It was a very hard book to put down.
And an unexpected (to me!) twist at the end was so beautifully satifying.
Wonderful, funny, sassy romp. The Perfect Mistress is definitely going on the keeper shelf.
